About the area
The 1912 St. John the Evangelist church was built of Seco brick in the Romanesque Revival style, designed by Fred Bowen Gaenslen and built by Alfred Wottlin. It held services until 1969, was rededicated as the parish hall in 1972, and became a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1992. It stands at 2102 Avenue J, about four-tenths of a mile south of the courthouse, just south of US 90.
